From behind a large boulder, Damon waited for the searats to appear.
They had left their ship and were now at the slave compound.
They would be returning soon, with a few slaves in tow.
The plan was to get the slaves safely to the cave and take down as many vermin as possible in the process.
The otter waited for Mika’s signal.
A small, black pebble roiled down the path, past Damon and out of sight.
The otter peered out from behind the boulder.
He could see the vermin slowly making their way down the narrow path, that whined down the steep cliff.
He was surprised that the ones they were taking away was the otter family.
Now he was ever more determined to rescue them.
He ducked behind the boulder and unsheathed his sword.
The searats were right in front of him now.
He heard a cry and looked up to see a rat fall forward, an arrow protruding from it’s back.
The vermin did not have time to react as Damon charged into their mists.
He slashed left and right, leaving some disarmed, others lingered.
A large rat stood in front of the otters, armed with a sharp spear.
Before Damon could reach him, he hurled the spear at the otter.
A red flash, which Damon made out to be one of Mika’s arrows, hit the spear pole with such force that it was spun around, embedding it’s self deep into another rat’s chest.
He fell to the ground with a cry.
The large rat, now weaponless, turned and fled, disappearing among the vermin crew.
Damon hurried to the otters and cut the ropes that bound them.
Rippler happily clapped his hands.
Kelley smiled, “I knew you would not let us be taken away.”
“Of course not.” he said. “I promised that you would be---.”
“Watch out!” she screamed. But she was too late.
The club came crashing down on his skull from behind.
Damon stumbled backwards, dazed.
Another blow laid him senseless.
